Claire Conner holding the May 12, 1961 issue of LIFE magazine in which her photo appears as part of a feature story on The John Birch Society.

Claire was 14 years old, the youngest person in the photo. In the two page spread, she is the 3rd person from the right. Her parents, Laurene and Jay Conner, and her brother, Jay R., are on the first page of the photo 4th, 5th and 6th from the left.

Author’s father 7th in list: Mr. S. J. Conner. His full name is Stillwell John Conner or Stillwell J. Conner. Almost everyone, including his Birch friends, called him Jay. (Sometimes the last name was spelled Connor – a common mistake.) Fred Koch, the father of the infamous David and Charles is second from the bottom of this page.

The last paragraph, written by Robert Welch (RW) explains the functions of the Birch Society council. He worries in the second part that the Communists will “arrange” his death. They did not. Welch died of natural causes in 1985.
